A Family Wedding Dress
Desiree Maumus will be wearing her mother’s wedding dress on August 29th, 2015. We recently had the privilege of cleaning and preparing that beautiful and classic wedding gown for her nuptials. This wedding dress, a family heirloom, has an awesome background story!
Desiree’s mother, Darleen Dowling Maumus, bought her wedding dress at D.H. Holmes on November 24th, 1964 for her February wedding. Incidentally, this old New Orleans department store was mentioned in the novel, A Confederacy of Dunces. Darleen paid for the wedding gown, which she bought for $130; its petticoat cost $18, on layaway, a price many modern brides would envy.
Darleen and her husband Raymond Maumus were married for 38 happy years and were parted by his death. Desiree hopes her marriage will be as long and happy as her parents’.
Desiree’s Plans for the Wedding Dress
Desiree especially loves the front of the dress, its simplicity, neckline, and the long string of buttons down the back. She plans to convert its long sleeves into cap sleeves for her wedding in August.
