Honoring My Mother – A Restoration of Heart

A Vintage Wedding Dress Story by Ginger S. I found my mother’s wedding gown in a plastic garment bag, rolled up and tucked in a plastic bin. My mother bought the dress in 1969 for $163, according to a note she stored with the dress. Jean Ellen Finn, my mother, wore this dress when she married my father, Rodger Dale Miller, in Santa Barbara, CA on November 15, 1969. My mother was a military wife, and this dress remained packed away in bags or boxes and traveled across the country for many years. She had a family to raise and ends to meet, so I’m sure that cleaning and...

1800’s Scottish Heirloom Christening Gown

The Story of a Heritage Piece by Barbara B. This christening gown was brought to America from Paisley, Scotland by my great-great grandmother, Janet Hume. She was born in 1839. I can only assume that my great grandmother, Nettie Fitkin Bennett, also wore the gown. My grandmother, Myrtle Coates, would later wear the family heirloom gown in 1882. Our Christening Gown Keepsake Box The box that was used by my mother and possibly my grandmother to store the gown. My Aunt Alice Aldrich Wearing the Gown in 1914 I wore the gown in 1955. Our new grandbaby will wear...

This month Save $25 if your gown is synthetic (not silk!). Our discount is good for both Heritage Select™ and Heritage Couture™ wedding gown care. Just use coupon code: NotSilk for $25 off! (Minimum purchase of $298) What fabric is your wedding dress made of?  If you answer satin, you are actually identifying the fabric weave and finish of your dress fabric but not the fabric fiber itself. It’s a common mistake that we see all the time.  Actually, there are polyester satins, acetate satins, and of course, silk satins.  If you aren’t sure, check your...

Something Old-Something New-Something Satin-Something Blue

A Vintage Wedding Dress Story by Chelsea I purchased my vintage wedding dress on Etsy. The listing for the dress didn’t leave much to be desired; the satin gown with box pleats, beaded lace appliques and modest train. It was beautiful but it was wrinkled and yellowed from age. At $32 (I’ve never been one to pass up such a great bargain) I purchased it anyway! The day it was delivered, I asked my mom to come over and help me try on the dress. Much to our surprise, it fit like a glove and we both had the bridal moment I’d always dreamed of-not in a fancy salon...

A Trio of Tradition

A Wedding Dress Story by Aloysia #2 The dress was custom made by a seamstress for Aloysia J Pecoul for her July 11, 1964 wedding at First Baptist Church of New Orleans. After the wedding, the dress was folded up and put in a clear plastic bag and then stored in a cedar chest. Aloysia J Pecoul on her wedding day, July 11, 1964 Twenty-three years later the yellowed dress was brought to a dry cleaners in hopes that it could be worn by her daughter. While the sleeves didn’t make it through the cleaning process, the color was more ivory than white. Aloysia P. Pertuit was able to...
