When Tony Mentel graduated from the Royal College or Art in London, he could never have imagined that he would one day be the creative director of Justin Alexander. The company, which was established in May 2001, has become one of the most popular bridal designers. Known for classic silhouettes with a unique twist, many of the designs are inspired by 1920s and 1950s fashion. When Mentel started designing for Justin Alexander in 2004, he brought along with him his focus on hidden details: silk linings, extra straps so brides could feel secure. This “technical handwriting” is one of the ways in which brides who wear Justin Alexander feel both glamorous and comfortable.

In a video he describes that the dresses are known for their “fantastic construction.” Whereas many wedding dress designers are more focused on how dresses appear, Justin Alexander wedding dresses not only look beautiful, but feel great due to well constructed designs. Mentel explains that even though the runway models are tiny, he designs thinking about the average size of a woman in the UK, which is a size 14.

The process behind Justin Alexander wedding dresses

Justin Alexander has a diverse collection; there are nine in all and each year 15-20 pieces are added to each collection. They are organized in different ways including an organic collection, a mid-price collection, high-price collection, and the Couture collection where the designers use Italian silk.

It all starts with inspiration. This can come in many different ways: film, theater, latest fashion trends, flowers, whatever. Mantel keeps books of things that inspire him. He stresses that in order to design a dress, he has to know what fabric it will be made out of. Each dress moves differently, and so the design has to compliment that movement.

As he looks at the things that inspires him, he is able to make different themes that coordinate with the given fabric. It starts with a small doodle where he adds details and focuses on technical pieces like lace and beading. He focuses on making the dress proportional, as it makes the job a lot easier for those who do the actual sewing. For the next six months, the dress is drawn, redrawn, sewn, changed, sewn again, receives feedback and more. Finally it is ready to add to the collection!

More about Justin Alexander Wedding Dresses

Aside from their thorough construction and well-fit silhouettes, Justin Alexander dresses often are not white. About 80% of them are ivory. Other colors include platinum, gold, and hints of black. Mentel explains that although these latter colors are popular, the company always offers a white version of the colored ones.

As for Mentel, designing talent seems to run in his blood. His aunt and uncle were part of the belt designing industry. His grandparents were tailors. After working for a number of designing companies during and after graduating from college, he worked for a few years for Joop!, a German fashion company. While he was
