A Wedding Dress Story: Marissa Finds Two Keepers

A Wedding Dress Story

By Marissa McGann

My gown has a neat story behind it. I had seen a picture of it about 4 years before I got married, which was 3 years before I was engaged! I was never the type to fantasize about my wedding, so when I came across the picture of this particular dress I was shocked at just how much I loved it – I even thought to myself if I never got married, I would consider buying it to turn it into a cocktail dress. Fast forward several years, I got engaged to my college sweetheart and began shopping around the Washington, DC area for my wedding gown. After trying on about 10 dresses, there were several I liked but I knew I couldn’t purchase one without trying on the dress I had seen years before.

I silently prayed the dress was still being made when I called the only store that ever stocked it, and to my relief they still carried it! So I booked an appointment at Kleinfeld Bridal in New York City and organized a trip up there with my mom, sister, and two bridesmaids. After meeting my consultant we headed back to the dressing area, and that’s when I finally got to see it in person – it was more perfect in reality than in the pictures. As I was zipped up, the sample fit perfectly from top to bottom and I knew without a doubt in my mind that it was going to be the dress I got married in. The rest of the appointment was a blur, I barely remember getting measured or ordering the dress – but I do remember my consultant telling me I was one of her easiest appointments ever!

After the wedding, I knew I needed to have the dress cleaned and preserved. I told my husband if I had chosen any other dress, I wouldn’t have felt so sentimental and would likely not have kept it. He told me he never even entertained the thought of possibly getting rid of the dress – keeping it was the only option in his mind! I guess I was lucky to come away from the wedding with two definite keepers 🙂
