Mary Anne’s 1870’s Vintage Wedding Dress Restoration

Mary Anne brought this very old and very fragile wedding gown to us to restore.  What a treasure for her to own this 1870’s vintage brocade and peau de soie wedding dress with lace cuffs. This tiny gown also had pleats and lace at hemline.  It had yellowed significantly and was in fair condition. However, it was in amazing condition considering it’s age. We set up Heritage Couture™ treatment for the vintage wedding gown which included several hours to hand baste the pleats and remove boning before careful hand cleaning and whitening. The lace at the sleeves and neckline was...

How To Wear Vintage Without Looking Out-of-Style

If you take the time to dig around in your local thrift store or your grandmother’s closet you’ll inevitably find some great vintage pieces. And while clothing goes in and out of style all the time, vintage is always in style. Dressing “vintage” is a catch-all way to say you didn’t just hit up the mall yesterday for today’s outfit — you’re brave enough to experiment with old clothing styles to create one of your own. While some people pull off the vintage look seamlessly, it can be intimidating — how do you dress vintage without just...

107-Year-Old Dress Comes Back to Life!

We loved learning about the unique history of Cathy L.’s dress as we restored it for her. We hope bringing the dress itself back to life brings its history back with it. Thanks, Cathy! Viola May Howard wore this dress on her wedding day to Joseph Des Lauriers in the year 1910. Viola’s dress during restoration Viola’s daughter Rosa wore the same dress on her wedding day to Thomas Logan in June 1944. The dress was restored to the same condition it was in the first time it was worn — in 1910! Viola’s daughter Marcia also wore it on her wedding day to...

Embellished Wedding Gown Restoration

It’s so rewarding to see already-beautiful gowns transform during our cleaning and preservation products. These gowns obviously have special memories to go with them if the owners are taking the time to clean and preserve them for future generations to keep or wear again. Before Wedding Dress Restoration This white satin wedding dress with lace and pearl embellishments was in surprisingly good condition considering its age– however the mildly dirty hemline and yellow spots on the front kept it from truly shining the way it used to. Upon closer inspection to the hem of the dress...

SURPRISE! A Wedding Gown Restoration Story

We couldn’t be more honored to be a part of a truly special surprise. Best of luck to Miranda and her mother Kim in pulling off this wonderful surprise! by Kim Stevens This dress is being preserved because my daughter, Miranda Stevens, wants to wear her Grandma’s wedding dress for her August 2017 wedding.  Grandma does NOT know that she is planning on wearing it and our hope is to surprise her when we go to “try on dresses.” (We’ve tried to slyly ask details and actually had to sneak into their house to get pictures!) My Mom’s name is Betty (Mathews)...

Alyson’s Wedding Gown Story

We think Alyson’s gown has such a simple, elegant beauty. We especially loved the silk belt strip breaking the alencon lace overlay that accented her figure perfectly! We loved working on her dress and loved hearing her wedding gown story. Thanks for sharing, Alyson! by Alyson Flaim “I wore the gown on our wedding day May 13th, 2016. “It was purchased online through BHLDN after trying it on at the BHLDN Georgetown, DC store. It caught my eye right away after I was engaged (2 years before our...

Vintage or just old? Before and after

Vintage or just old? Before and after

When this bride slipped on her sparkling, ornamented gown, we’re sure she knew her wedding day would be one to remember. What she might not have known is that her wedding dress, white, shining, and perfect as it was on the day of her wedding, would not be the same after the festivities or years later. When her dress arrived at HGP, it was wrinkled, yellowed, stained, and just felt old. While vintage is all the rage, no one wants their dress to have a vintage smell! 🙂 The intricate beading was barely holding on, half of the dress was yellowed, and the stains were hard to...

Jena’s Wedding Gown Story: The one and only

Note: We’ve never seen a lace with the same design as the lace overlay of Jena’s gown. The blush silk satin underneath really highlights that pattern and gives it the attention it deserves! Thanks Jena, for sharing the background of this unique dress with us! by Jena McRae I could not love this gown more!! I knew I wanted to go with a vintage look, but most genuine vintage dresses don’t fit me right… And I don’t love most wedding dresses. I considered going with something really untraditional at some point. But then I found this gown when I was browsing through...

Melissa’s Wedding Gown Story: Memories to pass on

Note from HGP: We love how Melissa’s gown has the crystal beading down the center – front and back. It adds the perfect sparkle! Her pearl buttons are also a rare sight- most dresses we work with use cloth buttons. We’re so grateful Melissa took the time to share her sweet story with us!   Melissa K. purchased her Allure Couture bridal gown from Flares Bridal + Formal in Walnut Creek, CA. She wed her husband Louis at the Berkeley City Club in March 2015, just 2 weeks after giving birth to their 3rd child. Their reception was held at 1300 on Fillmore in beautiful San...

A Dress for Time and Time Again

It’s not often that we can see a dress come to life quite like this– we’re so fortunate to have Lisa Seago share some of the history of an amazing dress that we had the privilege to preserve for years to come.   The first time this gown was worn, it was in 1953. It wasn’t worn again for almost 20 years! Then it was worn three more times– and in the same church each time! What a wonderful tradition to have been kept alive for so long. When the gown arrived at HGP, it certainly looked as if it had some history behind it. Yellowing is a natural...
