A Wedding Dress Story by Erinn R.

My now husband and I got engaged in September of 2012. Even though I knew we had over a year until our wedding on March 22, 2014, I couldn’t wait to start the search for my perfect dress. I began looking in October since my family was out for a visit and didn’t want to waste the opportunity to go with them (They live in my home state of Maryland, while I live in Indiana). I told myself I was ONLY LOOKING, because who buys their wedding dress a year and a half before the wedding? I had been warned about “dress regret” and jumping the gun because, “Oh my gosh, I’m getting married” is not the same feeling as “This is my wedding dress”.

I tried on about 15 dresses that we had picked out at different salons, but nothing was quite right. The last place we were going to “just look” was the Brides by Demetrios salon in Indianapolis, Indiana. I had had

a wonderful experience there the previous year when I had to find a bridesmaid gown for my older sister’s wedding. They were always so nice and accommodating so I was anxious to see what they had to offer. Right off the bat it was different. I sat down with a consultant and she asked me questions about what I wanted and about the ceremony and reception, to which I had very few answers…. It was still 18 months away! Then she left, pulled 5 gowns and said, “Let’s go have some fun, I found you THE ONE,” and she did. It was perfect.

Elegant and classic with beading and embroidery that looked like lace, but wasn’t. My sister called it vintage without looking like an antique. The dress had been in the collection for 6 years, and in that time the salon had only sold 6, so I knew it was special. Dress ordered, heart racing, I began THE WAIT. I was told it could take up to seven months for my gown to come in. I waited and waited. One day in February I noticed I had a missed call from the salon. My heart rate immediately increased, terrifying thoughts of the dress being discontinued or botched raced through my mind. I needn’t have worried, my dress had arrived…. Early… like way early. I went and inspected it and it was even more PERFECT. I was blown away. I didn’t feel like Belle or Cinderella, I felt like my own kind of Disney princess.

Practicing Wearing her Wedding Dress

Looking back I’m glad I chose my dress so early. There were so many logistics with a gown that large. For example, getting in and out of a car-like limo was not going to happen, so we booked a party bus for the wedding party. We took dance lessons for our first dance; I practiced in the petticoat so we knew what it felt like. I had to practice how to sit, and go around.

corners. Not many people tell you to practice sitting in your wedding dress, DO IT! I felt so amazing every time I put it on and even more so on our wedding day. I wore my sister’s Enzoani veil; it miraculously matched the ivory color of my dress exactly. Even now I look at it and fall it love all over again.

After trying on more than 15 dresses, Erinn chose the perfect one.

Our wedding was outdoors on March 22, 2014 in Wilmington, North Carolina. It was a perfect 75 degrees with a slight breeze. We didn’t really have a theme; we just wanted it to celebrate love and romance in a classic and elegant way. The entire day was perfect—wearing the wedding dress of my dreams, marrying the man of my dreams, and I get to keep both!
